Newport City Homes Internal Refurbishment

Wates Living Space is one of the main contractors on the Newport City Homes framework which is delivering the Welsh Housing Quality Standard (Decent Homes equivalent) improvements to its stock of almost 10,000 homes.

Project description:

Works involve kitchen and bathroom strip outs and full replacement; full re-wires; central heating system renewals including the replacement of combi-boilers and radiators.  In addition, adaptations are carried out where these are required.

Community Engagement & Employment

May 2010 saw a successful building futures programme.  The Wates run construction trade taster training programme, aimed at the long-term unemployed resulted in 6 out of the 10 delegates sourcing local employment. Two of the delegates were employed directly with Wates, another three with other framework contractors and one with the local supply chain.  In addition Wates has sourced a number of operatives in conjunction with the Newport construction initiative (NCI) which is a joint venture between job centre plus and Newport City Council.  This has resulted in Wates being awarded NCI charter company of the year 2010.

Added Value/Collaborative working

Wates has been instrumental in working collaboratively with the other framework contractors to achieve a standardised protocol to deliver the resident liaison service.  Ensuring letters, handover procedures & working policies are delivered cohesively with all residents receiving an identical service.

Wates head up the sustainability agenda in the strategic core group.  Working with the client & contractors, Wates led on bulk procurement saving with suppliers and maintaining local labour.
