Murrays' Mills, Manchester
Murrays’ Mills is the world’s earliest surviving urban steam powered cotton spinning factory, and is one of Manchester's most important 18th century building complexes'.
After securing £11m funding through Ancoats Buildings Preservation Trust (ABPT) and the Heritage Lottery Fund, Wates Construction was awarded the contract to carry out the permanent repair of the historic complex.
The 18 month restoration process involved the repair and strengthening of the frail and deteriorated building, which would eventually be used to support a whole range of sustainable uses that would give life and vitality back to the area.
A strong client relationship was formed and Wates liaised closely with not just the local community but also the local primary school children, giving them the opportunity of having a site tour and teaching them about regeneration and sustainability.
Wates project manager Bernard Talbot was awarded CIOB Project Manager of the Year Award in the Restoration Category, demonstrating our commitment to the project.
The hugely significant mill complex project has been successful in scooping the following awards:
- North West Regional Construction Awards
- Georgian Restoration of the Year Award, Georgian Group Architectural Awards
- RICS Conservation Project of the Year
- North West Insider Regeneration Award 2007
