Wates Construction has worked in partnership with the Ministry of Justice's (MoJ) Custodial Properties department to deliver savings in the region of £7.7 million across seven projects. Using modern methods of construction, HMP Rochester was a £34 million project completed in a record time of just 34 weeks.
HMP Winchester has been held up as a beacon of excellence by the MoJ. The team involved delivered an innovative design to replace the existing Victorian wing and rebuilt it on the same footprint, inside a live prison environment - a first in Prison Service History:
- Wates appointed onto the National Framework in 2004 to deliver design and build solutions for new build and refurbishment projects for the prison building programme.
- Involved at various different stages of design including the initial inception or to completing the RIBA stage D designs that had been prepared by others.
- 55 projects at 31 different establishments and covering an area from Middlesbrough in the North to the Isle of Wight in the South and Stafford in the West to Norwich in the East.
- Orders for work will take the value to in excess of £350m. The projects worked on are extremely diverse and have ranged in value from £80k to £65m and in speed from £2m in 24 months to £65m in 43 weeks on site.
- Dedicated Management team, led by a Key Account Director, made up with key people from all the different regional delivery centres.
- Responsible for ensuring we share knowledge and best practice.
- Created a dedicated supply chain of designers and contractors to deliver exceptional results for our customer.
- Developed clear communication lines, best practices, standard protocols and project performance indicators to ensure that the benefits are rolled out across their Strategic Alliance so they gain maximum benefit from any improvements.
- Involved in Offender Rehabilitation programmes and recently launched our Changing Paths initiative that provides specific training for employment in the construction industry and provides real jobs on release from prison.
