Above all, it's about people

Marks & Spencer Simply Food, Ecclesall Road

Wates Retail delivered the first standalone M&S ‘store of the future’ (an eco-learning store) in Ecclesall Road, Sheffield. This store is a flagship for M&S and includes the use of third generation refrigeration technology. Designed to BREEAM excellent standards, this £5.5m project is a 12,000 sq ft building incorporating a range of sustainable technologies including timber frame, reclaimed bricks, 100% LED lighting, and rainwater harvesting as well as recycling 99.4% of site waste.  With a major focus on developing and learning about sustainable solutions, in line with M&S’s Plan A ambitions, the trial store features a ‘living roof’ and a green wall to support wildlife. The local school’s ecology club visited weekly to observe progress from a specially-built viewing platform. The store is set to achieve a BREEAM rating of Excellent, and has received a Considerate Constructors Scheme score of 37.5 out of 40, making it one of the most sustainable retail outlets in the UK.

  • It features materials that have been carefully selected in order to reduce waste and energy use
  • 100% of the construction waste produced in the building of the store has been recycled
  • The project is undergoing full FSC certification and we expect 100% of the timber used in the building will be FSC certified, a first for M&S
  • All the bricks used in construction have been reclaimed from an old mill
  • The polished concrete floors will remove the need for additional floor covering

Operate sustainably

  • Harvested rainwater supplies all the toilets and irrigated the store’s green ‘living wall’, reducing water costs by up to 40% compared with a conventional similarly sized store
  • The store is heated by expelled heat from the refrigeration units, helping to reduce the carbon output by 23%
  • Highly efficient LED lighting will is used throughout the store, a first in the UK, and sun pipes bring natural lighting onto the shop floor

Create wildlife habitats

  • A sedum roof and green ‘living wall’ create wildlife habitats as well as insulate the building and act as a pollution filter
  • Bird boxes around the perimeter wall of the site
  • In total, 62 types of plants have been planted on or around the store

Provide sustainable transport solutions for customers

  • Electric car charging points are available in the car park
  • LED screens in the store give customers real time local transport information
  • Trolley and cycle shelters, located in the car park, are also be made from FSC certified wood and have a green sedum roof
