Marks and Spencer, Liverpool
A major refurbishment of a landmark building in Liverpool – the ultimate live environment!
Wates has been working to deliver exceptional results for a new store right in the heart of Liverpool:
A complex refurbishment of a collection of spaces: Church Street, Compton is a landmark building in Liverpool city centre, with an imposing stone façade, which for many years was run as a hotel. The M&S store consists of a front section, the old Compton House and a larger rear section built in the 1970s. The store is also claiming additional footage from three adjacent shops and empty first floor of the building.
- Work was carried out 24 hours a day, with the store trading as usual
- Close collaborative relationship with store management to agree phased areas to minimise disruption while allowing work to progress in a logical and cost-effective manner
- A specialist asbestos manager was dedicated to managing the asbestos removal contractor and to ensure the works comply with M&S and HSE requirements
- Structural works to all floors were required to form new stair wells, infill old stairs, strengthen/replace floors and knock through between store and adjacent units to increase sales footage
- This was a complex project carried out in a live trading environment within a listed building
