Above all, it's about people

Marks and Spencer, Galashiels

A progressive partner in achieving sustainability

Wates was asked to deliver a new M&S Simply Food store at Galashiels, that would achieve a BREEAM score of excellent. From the initiatives that were delivered on the project, it is predicted that the store will make the following savings in comparison t o a similar size food store:-

• 20% - 25% savings on annual energy consumption

• 20% - 25% direct carbon savings, which is the equivalent to 35 - 40 tonnes of CO2

• Significant savings to the carbon footprint of the store

• 25 - 30 cubic metres of water savings per annum.

This was achieved by:

Refrigeration
A number of design workshops resulted in bringing both food refrigeration and comfort cooling together as one installation, using only natural fluids to provide the mechanical cooling. The refrigeration system comprises a propane-driven compressor pack that works together with CO2 condensers to serve the refrigerated and frozen food cases and the cold room. The pack also serves an Ice Bank that uses the night time capacity of refrigeration duty not needed by the food equipment to provide the mechanical cooling to the store. This achieves a significant reduction in the carbon footprint of the store.

Wates believes this is the first food retail store to operate without the use of any climate-harmful refrigerant gases.

Heating and ventilation
The store’s energy efficient air handling plant incorporates a heat recovery ventilation system and all fan drives are inverter driven. The traditional electric heating has been replaced with a low temperature hot water heating system that is served by a gas fired condensing boiler which incorporates a low Nox burner. A lobby has been incorporated into the design to minimise heat loss and improve overall air tightness within the store. Energy sub-metering has been incorporated to allow more efficient management of the stores energy and an intelligent control system for the mechanical services, lighting and refrigeration systems has also been incorporated and linked ready for external monitoring and change of parameters. This will also allow more efficient management of the stores energy use.

Lighting
Suncatchers and sunpipes bring natural daylight to the stock and circulation areas. The efficient lighting systems incorporate T5 long life lamps and all back of house lighting is controlled by P.I.R. occupancy sensors. LED lighting has also been incorporated within the external lighting.

Water
The store incorporates water saving devices such as dual flush toilets, urinal flush controls, percussion taps, and the toilet lobbies have P.I.R. sensors connected to electric solenoid valves which shut the water supply to the toilet areas in periods of low usage. Rainwater has been collected and is used as recycled grey water serving the toilet cisterns. There are also recycling initiatives and cycle racks and showers installed to encourage staff not to drive to work.
