Luton Building Schools for the Future programme
Wider education: Historic BSF scheme embraces community
This Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme involves the rebuilding or refurbishment of all of Luton’s 13 secondary schools. With a total value of £280m, it is the single largest investment programme in local education for over 50 years.
Going beyond the conventional BSF remit, the scheme not only provides world-class educational facilities for the area’s schools, it also integrates them into the wider community. The first project delivers a community library, theatre, adult education, youth facilities and multi-agency office space to create dynamic and exciting community amenities. Ultimately, the partnership will also include social housing, primary schools and leisure projects such as the Luton Aquatic Centre.
This investment in Luton’s infrastructure will bring an economic boost to the area, creating a large number of local jobs and opportunities for apprentices, as well as improving the standard of education for young people. We are committed to using a substantial proportion of local labour, suppliers and sub-contractors and to delivering over 295 apprenticeships in the first five years of the programme. This forms part of a major added value programme.
