Lea Manor School, Luton
Lea Manor School in Luton was one of the original projects through the Building Schools for the Future programme.
The £18m project saw the full refurbishment and remodelling of an existing school over five phases.
The project presented many logistical challenges, as works were taking place in a live school environment. As each phase completed, the school would relocate into the new phase, and Wates would take over the next vacated area. The constant and effective monitoring of the decant arrangements and logistic requirements with the school led to no interruptions to the schools operations.
Features of the finished school include:
- Heart spaces provide open areas for recreation and teaching.
- A new theatre, entrance area, dining hall and teaching clusters
- General teaching areas which cover all the normal curricular activities.
This project offered many opportunities to local people. Apprentices were taken on through the project, a Wates Building Futures scheme was run which took on local people through a Get into Work training course, a National Skills Academy for Construction was set up on site, and Wates provided many opportunities for work experience through the project.
The project was awarded a sliver Considerate Constructors award.
