Historic restoration of Victorian Leisure Centre
This significant refurbishment project saw an historic 1901 Victorian building being restored to its former glory ensuring outstanding new leisure facilities for the local community in the London Borough of Camden.
Completed in July 2010, this challenging project was completed on budget, to programme, achieved a 'Very Good' BREEAM rating and had a resounding 390 days accident free.
The refurbishment consisted of four key elements:
- A thorough restoration and refurbishment to the Willes Pool. This included the installation of a new, high level, fibrous plaster and slate roof with roof lights.
- A complete structural renovation to the Grafton Pool and Learner Pool, including the casting of two new swimming pool tanks and viewing galleries.
- The construction of a new-build reinforced concrete frame consisting of a concrete raft foundation bearing on London Clay, with steel roof members and prefabricated, glu-laminated timber roof trusses.
- A shell and core works to Prince of Wales Road and RE Block for residential use.
A new reception, changing rooms, and fitness gym were also incorporated into the new centre, and the building of an extension provided much needed floor space for the centre’s aerobic studios.
Our site team liaised regularly with the local community as the project was in such a close residential environment. Having a close communication with local residents by including the issue of management plans for the build to them, and holding Q and A sessions with Camden Council ensured they were informed of all project progress and was also essential in minimising any disruption caused.
