Improving skills
Improving the skills of young people and those not in employment, education or training is at the core of our CR strategy. We are commited to supporting schools in raising standards and aspirations, ensuring that our resources are targeted and helping to equip young people with the skills and abilities demanded by the economy of today and the future.
We recognise that the construction industry has a serious issue around recruiting people with the right skills, and fulfilling this need complements our own aspirations to improve community prospects by providing opportunities for all.
Our educational programme sets out to raise achievements and aspirations of young people to show them the sustainable career prospects offered in construction.
We seek to explore ways in
which we can influence the education agenda. Our Chairman and CEO Paul
Drechsler chairs the Business in the Community Education Leadership
Team and we also have board positions at the UK Commission for Employment
and Skills Commission, Construction Skills and London Skills and Employment
Board.
We have developed an online
resource which supports the Construction & Built Environment Diploma
(www.cbelearning.co.uk).
We run a two week work experience to offer students an insight into construction.
Alongside further education colleges in Kent, the Learning Skills Council, Kent Works and Construction Skills, we developed the Work Ready Award which seeks to give young people the personal skills they need to start work in the construction industry. This has been introduced to young offenders at the custodial unit Wates build in Rochester.
We work with education business partnerships in local areas to identify ways to improve outcomes for young people.
