Glastonbury House
Wates carried out a radical overhaul of a 1960s tower block in the heart of Westminster and transformed it into an exemplar model for other high-rise regeneration schemes.
The block was remodelled to create homes for people aged 50 and over.
The work we carried out included providing kitchens, bathrooms and building services to new intelligent and green standards and was the first use of 1NTEGER technologies on a tower block refurbishment.
Residents benefitted in a whole range of ways including:
- Improving safety and security through the provision of warden call, intercom and fire detection measures
- Reducing energy and carbon emissions by connecting the building up to the local district heating system
- Saving water through rainwater harvesting
- Building a spectacular ‘skylounge’ to give residents panoramic views across the whole of the capital
CityWest chief executive Brian Johnson said: “This was a major challenge because the residents of the 162 flats all stayed living in the block. The team held monthly meetings with the residents’ steering group to keep them up-to-date with developments.
Thanks to Wates, the residents now have comfortable facilities, lower bills and an aging tower block which is fit for the 21st century."
