Fielden College, Manchester
Manchester College's Fielden Campus was transformed by Wates from a tired and drab 1960’s 6 storey re-inforced concrete framed building to a modern, state-of-the –art College in only 37 weeks.
The project is an excellent example of a value for money refurbishment with the benefit of collaborative working, the whole team working together to achieve high end quality against strict budgetary constraints and a non-flexible end date.
The completed College building, which specialises in hotel management and catering, includes;-
- a Surestart Centre on the ground floor
- two hotel suites
- restaurant, bar and demonstration kitchen facilities
- general teaching and office space
- an extensive refectory
- a learning resource centre (LRC)
To improve the visual impact of the main building, a new Shuco cladding system was added to the principle elevations with extensive bronze anodised glazing and curtain walling to the ground floor elevations, which included the main entrance, refectory and learning resource centre. Wates conducted value engineering on the glass specification, managing to reduce cost but maintaining performance.
A green sedum roof was applied to the learning resource centre, with the programme dictating that the work be undertaken during a very harsh winter. A Very Good BREEAM rating was achieved.
Wates handed the project over on time and under budget to a delighted client and consultant team.
