East Surrey College
Wates Construction successfully handed over the main building of East Surrey College in June 2010, allowing students to begin using their new facility for the start of the new September term.
Features of the 16,000m2 facility include:
- An impressive "winter garden" in its main atrium consisting of planted trees, light entering in from all angles, open space, and specialised acoustic features to ensure no echoing.
- A five storey main administrative block, sports hall and auditorium space
- A spacious terrace to the rear, with impressive landscaping and a green roof system providing an ecological extension to the tree lines frontage of the site.
Benefits to the client include:
- Completed on time, to the client's budget with the final account agreed six months prior to handover
- Excellent communications links were established from day one and we always had clear dates for decision making requirements. This enabled all stakeholders to deliver on their commitments on time.
- Our site team engaged closely with the various faculties of the college, resulting in giving work placements which in some cases led to full time employment.
- We provided a Wates Building Futures programme taking on the long term unemployed and former offenders, giving them a 2 week course of both site and college works.
The new facilities at the college include outstanding resources in a wide range of vocational areas including construction, hair and beauty therapy, business administration, ICT, travel and tourism, health and social care, child care, motor vehicle and engineering.
