Cockington Court, Torbay
UPDATE
January 2011
In the last quarter of 2010, our team at Cockington Court have continued to work hard towards the April handover. As the work on site progressed, our people were also pleased to invested time in the local community, a subject close to the heart of Steve Parrock of the Torbay Development Agency. They, along with Wates, South Devon College and Working Links, helped to host a Building Futures event.
The week long programme, held at Devon College and our Cockington site, was aimed at local people with or without experience of the construction industry. It included a variety of introductory training sessions and learning experiences, including: plastering, bricklaying, painting and decorating. It also covered aspects of first aid and health and safety awareness and culminated in a day on site, fitting out the pottery studio area. 12, long term unemployed adults completed the programme, of which five have been selected to undertake four weeks unpaid work experience placements at the Cockington site, with Wates and our supply chain.
In the run up to Christmas, our team also contributed towards Cockington Court’s ‘Wear It Pink’, breast cancer awareness event and their traditional Christmas Fayre. The latter required some temporary realignment of our hoarding and fence lines to accommodate marquees and extra members of the public. We also provided some temporary power and lighting. Our team were proud to play their part in making this annual event a success.
This live project which began in May 2010, involves the refurbishment of a grade II* Listed Building and the construction of new studios and workshops.
The existing building dates back to Tudor Times, and with such an historic building our team have had to take a very sympathetic approach to the works, maintaining very close communication with the conservation stakeholders and client throughout.
Cockington Court is an important tourist and leisure attention in the area, and as works are taking place, we ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. As works are spread across the whole site, our team are in daily communication with staff, operatives, and the general public, and at all times ensure that they promote the highest standards of professionalism, safety and consideration.
The budget of the project has been very tight throughout, and thanks to the technical expertise and specialist supply chain our team provided, cost effective and practical solutions have been achieved.
We also introduced SIPS (structural integrated panel system) and timber framing and this has brought about significant programme and sustainability benefits to the new build element of the project.
Our team have also taken a very proactive approach in engaging with the local community, including employing local suppliers where possible, involving local education providers and have recently completed a Building Futures programme.
