Birmingham City Council
With 66,000 properties, Birmingham City Council is the largest council landlord in the UK and in 2004 it decided to upgrade nearly two thirds of its stock – around 63% - that was classified as ‘non decent’.
Such has been the success of the Birmingham Construction Partnership, the deal, which was due to last five years, has now been extended by a further two until 2011.
Under the partnership, we had completed by March 2009:
- 4,659 rewires
- 6,122 central heating systems
- 864 roofs
- 11,191 UPVC windows
- 9,806 secure by design doors
- 714 structural repairs
The work we and two others have carried out has arguably been on the biggest Decent Homes project across the country so far.
As well as sprucing up rundown homes, our team has helped local areas across the city benefit from a host of initiatives designed to improve the lives of people living there. These have included:
- building an outdoor classroom at a local nature reserve
- donating new kit for a children’s football team
- refurbishing a communal room at an elderly persons’ sheltered accommodation scheme
So far, the partnership has won a number of awards including a Contract Journal Supreme Award as well as the 2008 West Midlands Centre for Constructing Excellence Sustainability Award.
