Birchwood Community High School, Warrington
This project consists of the construction of two facilities: a new Arts performance Centre, and a Post 16 College for a secondary school in Warrington.
Both buildings are of similar construction consisting of steel frame structures, stainless steel columns, external patent glazing and rendered block work façades to complement the existing school. The internal finishes will provide new teaching areas, communal areas and music, dance and theatre facilities which will all be linked in with mains services and IT across the site.
The project is being carried out in a live environment and it has been a high priority of our team to engage with the client to understand the key deliverables allowing minimal disruption to the school at all times.
Added Value
From the offset, our team have engaged closely with the school on a programme of pupil engagement. Wates Education co-ordinator has worked with the school to develop an activity programme in order to use the construction activity as a learning tool.
Examples of some of the initiatives that Wates have set up on this project include:
- Attendance at Parents Evening to give children and parents career advice.
- Monthly quiz with prizes relating to construction works.
- Dedicated information point.
- Regular site tours and events on site.
- Attendance at Ecology Group Meetings to assist the pupils with their 5 year Ecology Plan. Members of the Ecology Group visited Delamere Forest, where they choose the Christmas Tree for the School, which Wates donated.
- Sponsorship of Dance & Drama Awards for Presentation Evening.
- Health and Safety Seminars held during School Assemblies.
- Attendance at ‘Birchwood Business Breakfast Meetings’.
