Augustine House, Canterbury
A Canterbury tale: Stunning atrium lights up new college building
This striking new build four-storey college includes accommodation, kitchen and refectory, multi-purpose hall, large lecture theatre and the main campus library with storage for 300,000 books. The stunning centerpiece is a 120m glazed atrium spine that connects the two wings, with steel link bridges at every floor.
- Added value by helping the client with the concrete frame design, resulting in a decision to post drill all services holes, giving more flexibility to the design process.
- Produced a detailed 3D animation fly-round of the site and building to familiarise the client with the project and construction sequence.
- Made programme and structural weight savings by making changes to the roof drainage.
- Improved the geo-thermal installation by championing a wider diameter pile design.
- Changed the raised floor to a MSW system, giving cost and programme savings.
- Introduced a high calibre professional M&E consultant to the client, helping to achieve best value and co-ordinated design solutions to meet the demands of the programme.
Real attention to detail is evident throughout. There are splendid views of the cathedral and the mound from the atrium, external balconies and enclosed glazed roof viewing area. The entrance features a large brass 'compass rose' inset into the floor (a reproduction of the one found in the cathedral), flanked by knapped Norwich flint panels that complement the city walls opposite.
