Aston Hall, Birmingham
Valued heritage: A sensitive makeover of a Jacobean masterpiece
This highly prestigious project was part of a three-year makeover of one of England’s finest Jacobean mansion houses, set in 50 acres of parks and gardens. The gardens have been remodeled to a design more aligned to the original formal layout, along with the construction and installation of new masonry walls, railings, drainage, roadways and pathways, and extensive soft landscaping
The stable block renovation included extensive structural remediation, plus painstaking refurbishment of brick, stone and woodwork throughout. The specialized work involved such traditional techniques as lime plastering and joinery, and even included the manufacture of a replacement cupola for the retiled roof.
New M&E systems were sympathetically installed, along with a new glass lift, replacement staircases and a new commercial kitchen.
Inside the hall itself, the existing M&E systems were upgraded, new heating and lighting installed, and structural alterations made to facilitate the integration of an education suite. Again, this work and the restoration of finishes, joinery and floors throughout the building required specialist techniques and real understanding of the qualities of such a fine heritage building.
