Andy Hughes Business Director

Andy became a member of the Wates team in 2001 and since then has been involved with developing and managing a number of major accounts including M&S, Royal Mail and Morrisons. Andy is currently involved in the development of new future business as well leading the business. His particular strengths include planning, pre-construction planning, construction planning, cost planning, Safety and Site Standards, quality and delivery.

Andy started his career as an Engineer and was involved in major projects such as News International Print Facility in Knowsley and the Customs and Excise VAT Headquarters in Liverpool.  Andy has previously worked for Wimpey, Tarmac and subsequently Carillion for 13 years.

Steve Spilsbury Business Director

Steve joined Wates in 2007 to develop Wates Design, providing an integrated design service to complement the contracting offer. In 2011, Steve became responsible for the management and development of the banking sector business for Wates whilst also retaining board responsibility for design production and innovative new service offers.

Graduating from Nottingham University, Steve started his career with Budge Civil Engineering, moving to Boots The Chemist where he achieved Chartered Civil Engineering status. Steve then moved to Styles &Wood where he developed the Store Planning and Store Data businesses focused on the retail sector, becoming a Board Director in 2000.

Leigh Deakin National Operations Director

Leigh joined Wates in 2001 as a Project Manager working on the Marks and Spencer account and was instrumental developing the account into one of our key, repeat business customers. Our relationship with Marks and Spencer over the last 10 years stems from excellence in on site delivery, led by Leigh. Prior to joining Wates Leigh worked for a small shopfitting company as a project manager and was involved in projects such as Selfridges, WH Smiths and Waterstones.

In 2006 Leigh was promoted to Production Director accountable for the operations of all sites delivered to customers with accounts held from our Northern office.  In January 2012 Leigh was then appointed as national Operations Directors for the Interior & retail business and became a full time Board member. Leigh is passionate about driving best practices within the business and is accountable for Health and Safety, Site standards, resourcing and training as well as ensuring the on time delivery of all our projects nationally.
