Boost Skills
Our community investment programme concentrates on skills development, training and employment in communities of most need.
Our target is to improve the skills and employability of 500 people by 2010.
Five million adults in the UK are functionally illiterate and almost 2 million are unemployed. This lack of basic skills costs the UK £10bn a year and blights millions of lives through unemployment and lack of opportunity. At the same time the construction industry needs another 85,000 skilled people every year to keep pace with the next decade’s demands.
Our aim is to boost skills and employment in communities of most need, helping individuals achieve economic independence and adding to the national pool of skilled construction workers. We actively encourage our people, customers and supply chain to make a positive impact on their local community.
Our pioneering Building Futures programme underpins our core values of respect for people and communities. The scheme focuses on those facing barriers into employment such as lone parents, ex-offenders and the long term unemployed. Through a combination of guidance and mentoring Building Futures aims to equip individuals with the skills and confidence they need to get back into permanent work.
