Our Approach to Corporate Responsibility
Our CR culture is to lead by example, empowering our people to do what they judge needs to be done. Our annual community day is just one example of this in action. In 2007, we worked with customers and suppliers on over 60 local projects to improve the quality of life for homeless people.
Our CR plans are focused on three core programmes aligned with the major issues that strongly impact our customers, industry and business performance. Our 3 programmes are:

We continue to benchmark our performance and in 2007 we were delighted to achieve a score of 81% in Business in the Community’s CR index. Our goal is to achieve gold status in BiTC's Responsible Business Index.
Our CR highlights for 2007
- 110 people trained through our Building Futures programme
- 8,000 hours employee time donated to community day
- 80% non-hazardous waste diverted from landfill
- 10% reduction in CO2 emissions from Wates' head office
