Whitebeck set to wow older residents in North Manchester

31 March, 2011

Older residents in North Manchester are set to benefit from a flagship extra care development with the dramatic transformation of an empty tower block in Charlestown by Wates Living Space.

Whitebeck Court on Moorway Drive, which is managed by Northwards Housing on behalf of Manchester City Council, has been undergoing an £8.9m refurbishment programme by Wates Living Space and has been opened up for a sneak preview prior to completion.

The sixteen-storey building had fallen into disrepair but has now been redeveloped, creating 91 extra care apartments following grant funding from the Department of Health.

Whitebeck Court boasts a ‘Sky Lounge’ on the top floor providing panoramic views of the city and beyond, a community centre on the ground floor providing services to residents and the local community, and is set within enclosed and safe landscaped gardens.

Representatives from the local community, Manchester City Council and Northwards Housing were shown around the impressive development in advance of its grand opening on Friday 25th March.

Steve Jackson, Business Unit Director for Wates Living Space, said: “We wanted to give our clients and local residents the opportunity to see how far our work has progressed in the final stages of the refurbishment and I am overwhelmed with the positive response. This is a very important extra care development for North Manchester and nationally and one which we have been privileged to work on. It is always extremely rewarding to be involved in a project that will improve the lives of those who really need help and support.

Pat Scappaticci, Head of Retirement Housing and Caretaking Services at Northwards Housing added: “It has been great to see how work has progressed and to such an impressive standard. This is a fantastic project and older people living in North Manchester now have another great housing option coming their way. It will be a wonderful place to live and exciting for those who’ll be working there.”

Additional development attributes include emergency call provision, assistive technology installation, energy efficient glazing and lighting, photovoltaic panels, ICT suite, a therapy room, and a waste and recycling centre.
