Wates ranked amongst the top UK companies for responsible business practices
Wates Group, one of the UK’s biggest privately owned construction companies, has been awarded Platinum Plus status in the Business in the Community (BiTC) Corporate Responsibility (CR) Index 2011.
The annual BiTC CR Index examines the extent to which companies have put in place a responsible business strategy and integrated corporate responsibility infrastructure into their core business functions. The challenge at the Platinum Plus level is to not only demonstrate that these processes play a fundamental part in the commercial decision making process, but that a company also shows leadership in corporate responsibility and endeavours to influence the behaviour of others. Only a handful of businesses achieve Platinum Plus status each year, with the winners then going forward to be considered for the BiTC Company of the Year Award.
The judges’ comments on Wates included:
“Wates Group Limited’s management team clearly articulates the ‘Golden Thread’ that unites commercial and sustainability success…the company goes far beyond environmental compliance, through investing in developing a range of initiatives that add value to the environmental agenda.”
In addition to Platinum Plus, Wates has also been awarded four ‘National Big Ticks’ in the BiTC Awards for Excellence, in recognition of its specific programmes in supporting education, increasing employment skills, encouraging young people into work experience and environmental leadership.
Rachel Woolliscroft, Head of Sustainability at Wates, commented:
“Corporate responsibility and sustainable business practices have always been a core part of the Wates’ ethos, which we have summarised in our mantra - to make a lasting difference in the communities where we work. This applies to the environment, the resources around us and to people: our employees, customers, stakeholders, partners and all those who live and work in the communities we help to build. We are therefore delighted that BiTC has recognised our efforts by awarding us both Platinum Plus status and four Big Ticks.
“We have now set ourselves the challenge of creating local employment and training opportunities for 5,000 people who need it most by 2015, via our own internal employability programmes and by supporting schools through the work we are doing with BiTC’s ‘Business Class’ scheme. We are currently involved in one Business Class partnership with a school in Coventry, where we are working to raise the aspirations of young people, and we intend to form six more education-business partnerships by the end of 2011.”
