Wates Living Space give Ocean Estate a community garden

Staff from affordable housing contractor, Wates Living Space, have been swapping their hard hats for gardening gloves for the day to create a new garden for Ocean Estate community hall, as part of the company’s annual community day.
A team of 32 people spent the day transforming the rear of the Ocean Tenant & Leaseholder Association (OTLA) community hall, which was overgrown with weeds, into a stunning garden, dedicating a total of 266 hours to completing the work.
Prior to starting the project, the employees, who are working on a three year project to upgrade social housing on the Ocean Estate in Tower Hamlets, asked the OTLA to help them organise a project locally for the company event.
George Moroney, Business Manager for Wates Living Space said: ”When the OTLA suggested creating a garden for the community centre we thought it was a great idea.
“The centre is used by more than 150 people within the area from mothers and toddlers to pensioners. It is an extremely valuable facility for the estate so we’ve created a garden at the back of the centre to expand the facilities it has, and create a safe area for children to play.
“Community day is the highlight of our year. We really enjoy spending a day away from our usual day job, and doing something that we know will make a lasting difference to people’s lives.
“We also find that the work we start is often carried on by people living locally after we leave, which is a fantastic result.”
Each year, affordable housing contractor Wates Living Space, donates a working day for each of its staff members to carry out projects that benefit the local communities in which it works.
Last year’s community day saw 1,050 people from the Wates Group contribute over 10,000 hours on 89 community day projects, an investment worth more than £250k.
