Wates Living Space and St Paul's Primary School Spread A Larger Than Life Environmental Message

8 July, 2010

Pupils at a local primary school have joined forces with affordable housing contractor, Wates Living Space, in an effort to promote the importance of looking after the environment.

Wates Living Space is currently building 39 new energy-efficient homes in Addlestone on behalf of Thames Valley Housing (TVH) and heard about the ‘eco-warriors’ initiative at the nearby St Paul’s Church Of England Primary School. Wates Living Space approached the school to help bring the children’s lessons about waste recycling and saving energy to life.

Ray Gasson, Business Manager for Wates Living Space said: “We invited the children onto the site to show them some of the technology used in future proofing housing and bring some of what they are learning in school to life.

“As part of their visit we showed them the new development’s renewable energy features including solar thermal panels, which heat water for the homes, and urban drainage systems which utilise rainwater for flushing toilets.

“The children really enjoyed the visit so we have asked pupils to create an eco-advertisement which we will display on the hoardings around the site so that they can spread the word about looking after the environment.”

The new homes, developed by TVH in partnership with  Runnymede Borough Council, will comprise of 11 houses and 28 apartments built to the Sustainable Homes Standard level three making them 25% more energy efficient then normal housing.

Sarah Whelan, Eco Warrior Co-ordinator at St Paul’s said, “Our Eco-Warriors really enjoyed their visit to the Pinefields site. The children very much enjoyed wearing hard hats and high visibility jackets, learned a lot about building homes and were very impressed by the environmentally friendly aspects put into the new houses too.”

The new hoardings will be unveiled at the Pine Court site at Simplemarsh Road on Thursday 1st July June at 2pm.
