Wates Group in nationwide Community Day success
8 October, 2010
Through the Wates Group’s Annual Community Day, over 12,700 hours of work has been donated to local communities.
Wates’ Community Day is a volunteer scheme which encourages the company’s’ employees to make a difference to other peoples’ lives in the local community. This year 94 projects were delivered across the UK on one day. These included Ground Force style gardening projects, internal and external building refurbishment work, maintenance of National Trust land and hosting activities for local community groups.
Wates’ Chief Executive and Chairman, Paul Drechsler, said: “Our theme this year was simply ‘Supporting Communities’ and I am delighted with the massive impact that our teams have made as a result.
“At Wates we believe that above all, it’s about people. Supporting communities is at the heart of this and is an integral part of how we approach Corporate Social Responsibility. Our Community Day is a great example of how we go about making a difference to local communities.”
A Wates Construction team from Birmingham took on a makeover style project for a school in Coventry. They installed a willow arch and sensory nature trail for reception and nursery school children. Recycled materials were used for this project, which benefits the 350 pupils and everyone connected to the school.
Teams from Wates Retail and Wates’ Head Office spent the day helping the Surrey Wildlife Trust. Work included renovating a building for the Trust’s rangers and felling trees to preserve the natural beauty for the site’s visitors. The sum of work completed saved the rangers at Norbury Park three month’s worth of labour.
A Wates Living Space team from the North East spent the day renovating a boxing gym in Durham. The team worked with young people from the boxing club in the project, which helped to strengthen links with the local community.
A team from Wates Interiors spent the day at Coram’s fields, a seven acre playground and park for children in London. The team painted 3 rooms of the youth centre and put down new flooring in the music room. The team also renovated the toilet facilities, improving the park for all the families who enjoy visiting it.
