Kingston University marks Topping Out Ceremony
27 January, 2011
Kingston University's new £17m Law and Business faculty building reached a significant build milestone this week as the University, and Wates Construction held a topping out ceremony at the Kingston Hill Campus.
The event was attended by James Wates, Deputy Chairman of the Wates Group, Dr David Mackintosh -Vice Chancellor of the University, along with many further Wates and Kingston University representatives.
Project Director from Wates, Kevin Scott commented: "The topping out of the building for the new law and business faculty represents an important milestone for the scheme. With the heavy construction work now complete, we embark upon the finishing work poised for a successful completion of the project in October 2011”.
Wates began work on the project in March 2009 and the 80 week development will result in a new 7500m2 state of art teaching block constructed with the ability to house over 1000 students. The building is a 5 storey concrete framed structure that will incorporate several sustainable features such as Ground Source Heat Pump and Rain Water Recycling/Harvesting. The rest of the campus will remain open and “live” during the construction of this project.
Director of Property Management and Development at the University, Andrew McEwan said “The development is part of a multi-million pound campus programme for the University’s estate. This new building, at the heart of the Kingston Hill campus, will provide modern learning and teaching space for students and staff and will provide a new home for the Faculty of Business and Law”.
Historically, the topping out ceremony marks the topmost beam being placed in the building to complete the structure. Its origins harp back to pagan times where the purpose of the ceremony was to ward off ancient spirits and give a building the blessing of tree spirits. It traditionally saw a leafy branch of a tree set atop the roof.
