Byker Primary reward for Sandcastle Challenge
5 October, 2011
A primary school in Byker has battled it out amongst over 40 others to receive a cash prize for its sandcastle recreation of the famous Byker Wall.
Children North East presented Byker Primary School with a cheque for its part in the 2011 Sandcastle Challenge, with local contractor Wates Living Space match funding the donation to provide the school with a total of £400.
Almost 2,000 school pupils took part in the competition, which invites teams to build a specific structure from the sand, with prizes going to the five schools with the most impressive designs.
Currently delivering the £2m redevelopment of Bolam Coyne, Wates provided sponsorship to enable the school to take part the annual event, which was held at Sandhaven Beach in South Shields. This saw local builders from Wates visit the school in the weeks prior to the event to discuss potential sandcastle ideas with the children and work with them to see how they could be recreated in the sand. Once on the beach, they were given an hour and a 4m x 4m plot to construct their final castle design.
Joanne Jamieson, Regional Managing Director for Wates Living Space, commented: “It was a very refreshing change to be building on the beach with sand! I’m pleased that with our help Byker Primary secured this much-needed cash prize. The school’s staff and pupils are very supportive of our presence in the area so it’s wonderful to be able to give something back to them.”
Linda Bradley, Head of Byker Primary commented: “I’m very proud of our pupils for their outstanding effort in planning and building the Byker Wall sandcastle. This is a much-appreciated donation that will enable us to buy new school equipment for the benefit of all our pupils. I’d like to send my sincere thanks to Wates Living Space for kindly helping us to take part.”
Bolam Coyne is a highly distinctive cluster of housing that forms part of the Grade II* listed Byker estate in Newcastle upon Tyne. Previously derelict, the radical refurbishment is seeing the transformation of 17 one to four bedroom homes into 15 two and three bedroom homes.
