Building Better Life for Homeless
11 July, 2011
A centre for the homeless has been given a professional makeover by the Wates Retail team who are currently refurbishing John Lewis Reading. They joined forces with shop staff to'upgrade the property owned by Launchpad, formerly Reading Single Homeless Project.
Darren Hampston, Project Manager, said: "Whenever we are working on a project we like to find a way of giving something back to the local community. We approached ·the team at John Lewis who recommended Launchpad, a great charity which offers support to some of Reading's most disadvantaged and vulnerable people."
He continued: "Both the ceilings and floors needed replacing and new lighting was required SO we've been able to use all our skills and expertise on this project."
Partners from John Lewis also helped decorate and the store provided furniture for the building, in London Street, which provides two lodging rooms, a communal area and a small outdoor courtyard.
Colin Wallace, fundraising and communications co-ordinator for Launchpad, said: "It is community involvement such as this that is at the heart of any successful charity organisation and nowhere more so than in Reading, a town which has proved itself time and again to be generous, compassionate and committed to improving the lives of people who live here."
