Wates Construction was challenged with the £13.5m redesign and refurbishment of the London Transport Museum, a Grade II listed building in the heart of Covent Garden. It was crucial to preserve the original Victorian structure whilst contemporising the interior to create an enhanced space for visitors to enjoy. All works were undertaken within a live environment with unique exhibits remaining in situ throughout.
In addition to a complete refurbishment, the works have achieved 20% more space for exhibits with the creation of a new mezzanine floor. A larger reception area, revitalised shop, 120-seat lecture theatre with state-of-the-art projection and sound facilities, new visitor lifts, plus The Upper Deck contemporary café bar are all part of the improved museum.
The new design reduces Carbon Footprint by adopting natural ventilation and, the installation of photovoltaic slates on the roof - the first significant usage of its kind on a listed building in London - provides the capacity to generate up to 20% of the museum’s power.
