Wates is currently half way through the 18 month build period at the Langley Academy of Science. The £23 million pound project has been designed by Foster and Partners and is due for completion in June 2008. A second Phase of 30 weeks includes demolition of the existing school and provision of new school playing fields and car parking and will be complete in February 2009.
The design of the new school incorporates many sustainable resource solutions including Ground source heat pumps, solar panels, rainwater recovery, a biomass boiler and cedar cladding from sustainable resources.
The reinforced concrete frame is clad in a mixture of cedar and aluminium with a high performance felt roofing system.
Internally services are generally hidden from view below raised flooring with exposed lighting systems and acoustic ceiling panels. A main atrium area will serve as an assembly area and will be furnished with exhibits from the Henley Rowing Museum.
