health and safety

Health and safety is central to everything we do at Wates.  It influences the way we think, the way we plan, the way we behave and most importantly the way we perform.

Working safely is a core value for the Wates Group and we pride ourselves on our efforts to work incident and injury free.  Our health and safety strategy moves us closer to our goal of operating injury free in 2012.  Our focus is in three areas; accident and incident investigation, near miss reporting and the project inspection tool.

In 2008, we met our performance target for health and safety by reducing the number of RIDDOR injuries to our own employees and those of our supply chain by just over 25%. We aim to halve the number of RIDDOR injuries on a year by year basis.

Other health and safety highlights to date:

  • First Aid injuries down by just under 20%
  • Awarded RoSPA Gold Medal for Occupational Health and Safety for the sixth year in succession
  • Approximately 1,700 employees have received occupational health checks
  • Highly Commended QIC Occupational Health Award 2008
  • All site production staff, circa 500 employees, have attended the CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme
  • 30% reduction in absenteeism in 2009
